Isoelectric Focusing Electrophoresis

So here’s a quick post on how the IEF Electrophoresis is done…

We’ve hydrated our gels right? And the gels are placed on ceramic tray…

DSC_1135_000

Then, the gels are placed and coated with mineral oil again (Cover fluid). The electrode rack is placed over the paper, NOT the gel. The reason is to avoid direct contact to the gel.

The placement of electrodes as follows…

DSC_1150_006

Control Panel to run the gel electrophoresis…

DSC_1148_005

Watch the videos for more information…

Part 1 shows the setting of gel into the ceramic wells

Part 2 shows the setting of voltage and time for the electrophoresis run

Hope this tutorials could benefit everyone… Sorry about the soft audio because Ms Tan’s voice is very soft… so… next time have to ask her to speak louder… haha

Delayed Biomedical Instrumentation Notes

To all fellow friends,

I would like to apologize for the delayed notes for Biomedical Instrumentation. The delay was due to the different methods of Dr. Tioh passing the notes to me. Sometimes, he passed the notes to me in hard copy, and some other times, I’m required to download them from WBLE.

For this round of Spectrometry notes, the softcopy on the WBLE is in PDF format and if you guys noticed, it’s in full colour and a black background.

This creates some problem to the printer (the person who photocopies the notes), as the printing would be mainly in black. It’s a waste of printer toner and also resources as you guys would not be able to read the notes clearly.

I have addressed this issue to Dr. Tioh and he’ll be uploading new notes with CLEAN WHITE background for us. So please be patient.

In the mean time, download the softcopies and read it in your computer instead.

Thanks for your time and patience.

Richard.

P/S: To those who wish to contribute posts to this blog, please e-mail me your E-mail address to shinodahunter@yahoo.com. I will add you into our ‘Author’s List’. You do not have to be a blogger to blog and contribute items to this blog. Thanks.

Cute Microbes…

I know that I’ve posted this in my personal blog, I still think it is worth sharing with our other coursemates… so here goes…

This sem, we’re all studying Medical Microbiology and Parasitology. A friend of mine sent me an E-mail of microbes…

image001 image002

These microbes are dangerous and some are highly infectious… but some genius make these microbes into cute cuddly toys!

Bacteria - Bookworm

image003

Bacteria - Gonorrhoea

image004

Bacteria – Cold

image005

Bacteria – E. Coli

image006

This one is dangerous… see the fork and knife?  It’s flesh-eating bacteria…

image007

This one is headlice

image008

Kissing Disease… Epstein Barr Virus (EPV)

image009

Rabies…

 image010

Bacteria that cause bad breath. Oh ya, bacteria = plural. Bacterium = singular.

image011

Microbe that causes your pimples…

image012

Syphilis…

image013

Sleeping sickness disease

image014

Bacteria that cause sore throat (Tonsillitis)

image015

This one causes dysentery / stomach-ache.

image016

This one causes ulcers…

image017

This one is cute… like the cow… haha… it’s the brewer’s yeast… if not mistaken, it is Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

image018

The deadly one… HIV

image019

Another EXTREMELY deadly one… faster than HIV… the Ebola Virus…

image020

This one causes flu… note that flu and cold have almost similar symptoms but they are not caused by the same bacteria/virus.

image021

I’m not sure about this… this one is black death… hmm…

image022

This one causes you to cough.

image023

Heartworm… wah!

image024

This one causes malaria… it’s a plasmodium.

image025

Mange…. hmm

image026

this is the neuron in your brain…

image027

This one looked like chicken… therefore, it is called chickenpox.

image028

This is your body’s fat cells…

image029

Herpes virus

image030

Red blood cell…

image031

Fungi… toxic mold

image032

White blood cells…

image033

This one has eyes that looked like going to explode… causes rabies.

image034

Last one… salmonella… can cause you to ‘lau sai’ a few days and go into the hospital… haha

image035
